John Gordon Burness was born on 30 June 1871 in Inverbervie, Kincardineshire, Scotland. He was the son of Alexander Burness and Helen Gordon. He married Susannah Williams, daughter of Robert Edward Williams and Mary Ellen Plunkett, on 29 December 1898 in Conservative Hall, Motherwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He died on 11 March 1947 in 57 Leven Street, Motherwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland, at age 75.
