He married Ann Strachan, daughter of James Strachan and Margaret Connel, on 6 May 1849 in Fetteresso, Kincardineshire, Scotland. He died on 29 November 1877 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, at age 56. He was buried on 3 December 1877 in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
