Mary Burness was born on 26 April 1815 in Johnshaven, Benholm, Kincardineshire, Scotland. She was the daughter of David Burness and Elizabeth Irvine. She married James Watt, son of Alexander Watt and Helen Renny, on 12 December 1835 in Farnell, Angus, Scotland. She died on 17 May 1894 in 40 Cairnie Wynd, Arbroath, Angus, Scotland, at age 79.
