John Anderson Burness was born on 16 June 1846 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. He was the son of William Burness and Margaret Anderson. He married Mary Stuart Coupar, daughter of Alexander Coupar and Grace Phillips, on 2 December 1872 in Dallfield Terrace, Dundee, Angus, Scotland. He died on 16 March 1939 in 33 St Alban's Road, Edinburgh, Scotland, at age 92.
