James Murray Burness was born on 29 June 1859 in Middle Street, Johnshaven, Benholm, Kincardineshire, Scotland. He was the son of John Burness and Catherine Donaldson. He married Janet Thomson, daughter of David Thomson and Margaret Dobie, on 14 December 1883 in Dalkeith, Midlothian, Scotland. He died on 27 September 1900 in 4 Abbeymount, Edinburgh, Scotland, at age 41.
